Het vorige bericht is al weer een hele poos geleden, zowel in tijd als afstand. Ons verblijf in Laos was korter dan we gedacht hadden; een onaangename ervaring met corrupte Laotiaanse militairen deed iedere zin om meer van dit land te proeven wegnemen. En hoewel alle overheden natuurlijk corrupt zijn, is bitter niet mijn favoriete smaak. Terug in Nong Khai (Thailand), zette het natte en enigzins koele weer zich voort en Apryll voelde zich niet goed. Zodoende besloten we met de trein te reizen totdat ze zich weer beter voelen zou.
Zo ging het, vaak hevig hobbelend en soms uit de stoel gelanceerd wordend - derde klas is 'the way to go' - via Khon Kaen en Nakhon Ratchasima naar Si Ayutthaya, waar we een aantal ruines van zo'n 800 jaar oud bezochten, die ogenschijnlijk werden wachtgehouden door straathonden. Ik bedacht dat die honden in al die jaren weinig verandert waren; het merendeel van de dag slapend en onbezorgd en probeerde me de omgeving door hun ogen te aanschouwen.
Na de drukte van de steden voelde het goed weer op de fiets te zijn, ondanks het hete en nu ook benauwde weer. Keer op keer weer de vreemde ervaring van duurdere overnachtingen in niet-toeristische gebieden en budget-opties in toeristische (hoewel een dagbudget van 15 Euro voor ons tweeen vrijwel altijd voldoet), rolden we verder naar Kanchanaburi (daar waar de fameuze 'Bridge over de river Kwai' is) en Ratchaburi.
Het typische Karstgebergte ziet er vreemd uit; van een afstand vallen de steile wanden aan beide zijden van de berg op en op het punt van passeren is zij flinterdun alsof het een filmdecor uit een Westernmovie betreft. Eilanden in een oceaan van felgroene rijstvelden.
Ten slotte, na het passeren van palmboomplantages, bereikten we de kust! Heerlijke zeebries, het altijd als muziek in de oren klinkende geruis van de zee en het ontastbare van de eindeloze lege horizon.
Momenteel zitten we in een Internetcafe in Cha-am, een ontspannen kustplaatsje waar we al een week verblijven. De zee is er heerlijk warm! Wordt er dan niet meer gefietst?! Jawel, zo hebben we gisteren een dagtochtje naar het veel toeristischer en drukkere Hua Hin ondernomen en waren we erg blij weer terug te keren. Onze route volgde grotendeels een onverhard pad langs een irrigatiekanaaltje waar we nauw in de gaten werden gehouden door kuddes koeien. Ook fietsen over het strand was zeker het noodzakelijke schoonmaakwerk nadien waard!

Leaving the City - By Apryll

We have happily spent over a week in this coastal town, Cha-am, it is all we were longing for on the trip from the Laos border. We swim in the sea everyday, and yesterday when we made a ride some 25km south to Hua Hin. We were not surprised to see a little California, box stores, Resorts, many cheap trinket, and clothing shops...that town is full of Farang, we saw many more than Thai's, which is just the opposite here in CA-am!! The water is so warm, the beach is pretty quiet. I have been recharging from too seeing too many people, I'm not use to it on a long term basis...the days are flying by with moonlit walks, or once a ride on the beach. Only one because it was a lot of work to clean the bikes of all the salt water and sand!! A fishing pier is close by with many small boats, it all feels very easy and innocent here.

We have been having uneventful days, my back is out, so we have taken 2 train rides south...the Local train is packed with folks selling food and drink, walking up, and down the cars shouting above the chug-chug of the old train, "Coke, Pepsi, Beer, YESIE (20) Baht!" Across from me I see Joost bounce out of his seat several times, it's a bumpy ride. Hope this has helped my back, maybe it popped back into place...We have hatched a plan to head south, hit the ocean, were we hope to find some smaller, or at least characteristic towns! The cities we have been in for the past 10 days, or more have been uninspiring, and all look the same. So it goes with cement buildings. We are looking forward to a change in scenery.

We made an early morning visit to the ruins here in Phra Nakon Si Ayutthaya, managed to seek into the first two before it became busy...unlike all the other ruins we've seen you pay per site. The Wat's here are scattered in the city with roads, and shops all around. This has tarnished the experience, and compared to Sukathai, the feeling isn't there. The last visit was to Wat Mahathat, where a small Buddha's face is snuggled into the clutched of an old tree trunk. It was beautiful, with two older men standing guard over the face, making sure visitors lowered themselves below the Buddha. This was difficult as it was low to the ground, at the base of the huge tree. Sit and stoop, take your picture, leave some coins...Most of the Buddha's we saw were just torsos, with hands on the legs, very worn down by time. Bangkok is now 80km below us, the main street here is a hub of movement, people and cars are making there was through the crowded area, off of this street the roads are pretty quiet.

Been biking for the past three days, it feels so good to be moving again, a healthy body is the best thing in the world. The roads here are busy, we see many dogs, and a few cats hit by the hurried traffic. We also saw a Monitor Lizard, about 5-6 ft long dead on the road side, later we saw two tails hurry into the brush...these otherwise nice people go crazy when there is a motor under their ass. Racing around, expecting pedestrians, and animals to jump out of their way...they don't slow down a bit!! I am a little worn out from being on the constant vigil, looking out for traffic. There is so much of it, it really blows my mind. But being a part of it is much easier, walking is a drag, but the biking goes smoother, at least in the cities.

We slept last night at a Thai couples home, they were very welcoming, making us feel right at home, "Make this your home." Feeding us a great breakfast before we headed out. Mr. Paungjamyarm spends around 5 hours a day, chanting and meditating in front of his small altar, too bad about the Language barrier, smiles seem to be the best world Language! We have been able to find smaller roads, and the traffic has died out on them. Coconut Palms are all around, and many storks and water canals, along the roadside. We are close to the coast, and should fall to sleep to the sound of waves tomorrow!!

We have made it!! Today we caught our first view of the sea before lunch, a deep breath of salty air and the smell of fish and sand is heavy in the air. We have been on small roads all day, passing salt fields, with huge piles of it sparkling in the late afternoon sun. With the sea has come the long anticipated sea breeze, it is blowing like crazy outside right now, but earlier it cooled us down from the relentless sunshine. Tonight we sleep under dozens of Buddha's watch. About 20 dogs of all sizes are barking outside the temple, a friendly Monk gave us fresh fruit, water, and has made us feel welcome. All the rooms here are way over prices, many are fancy huts, but some are the shabby rooms we usually pick, still 800B, about 500 too much for us. It feels great to be here at long last and with the wind has gone my growing feeling of discontentment. I am worn out from all day in the saddle, my tummy is growling, and Joost is out of the shower, so we are off to a much needed feast!!

Ha dit is weer een mooi begin van de werkdag, een bericht uit het verre oosten met mooie foto's. Vooral de foto met geit is cool! De Ruine met bloesemboom is ook een mooie plaat.

Leuk om weer eens een berichtje van jullie te lezen over jullie belevenissen en ons een indruk te geven aan de hand van de foto's. Het bevalt jullie nog steeds goed behalve Laos was even wat minder. Na al die rijstvelden en binnenlandse wegen is het ook weer leuk om aan het strand te zijn. Geniet nog maar met volle teugen but don't get drunk in the water/wine.

leuk dat je gisteren naar huis belde! Het is leuk om in Waspik te zijn en oma weer eens te zien. Papa hoeft nog maar 9 dagen te werken (in totaal) en heeft het plan om jullie in Montana op te zoeken, dus 'wie weet!!'

We hebben alle foto"s nog eens bekeken en er zitten echt leuke bij hoor. Vorige week waren we nog bij je vader en hebben we Maud weer even gedag gezegd omdat ze de volgende dag weer vertrok. Het was er gezellig. We hebben taartjes gegeten en heerlijke koffie. En bij deze wil ik je alsnog bedanken voor het lenen van de snelle skischoenen, ik wist niet wat me overkwam, zo snel ging ik?? door de schoenen denk ik hoor. Nou we wensen jullie nog veel reisplezier en geniet er samen van, veel liefs koen en chantal
